Browse Guard Station & Sequoia Tree Hike

We had a hike planned today. Karen & Sharon arrived at our house with a screw in their tire, which we needed to take care of before the hike. Of course, it went flat on the way to the repair shop......so we were a little late getting started for the hike.

On the road again.......only to discover the road to the trailhead was still closed for the winter season, so we opted for Plan B. It has been years since Kent and I have visited the area, Karen & Sharon have never been here before. The Pine Valley Mountains are like an oasis in the desert. Although rugged, the area features a few streams, a variety of plants and trees and great views in every direction. We covered 8.03 miles in 4 hours today.

This is where our hike began

The 50 & older gang . . . Karen, Kent, Sharon & me taking the photo.  We can still move!

The wildflowers were everywhere.  Zion's, Kolob Terrace is in the background

Mill Creek

The road only climbed about 800 ft. in elevation, but offered some great views

Almost to the Browse Guard station & the Sequoia tree.  Two more miles to go!

The Guard Station needs some work, but gave us some shelter from the wind to enjoy our snacks

One, of only two Sequoia trees in Utah.  It is said to be about 62 yrs old and 110 ft. tall

We're not a bunch of tree huggers . . . really we aren't!!

The Pine Valley Mountains are only minutes from our house

The mountains are rugged, but provide a lot of recreational opportunities

The entire town of Spring City is on the National Historic Register.  We had fun looking at the old homes

Lots of different styles of homes

Not only could you buy eggs at this house, the house was also for sale

Another side of the house, it was situated on a nice lot

This house was not as old, but very nice and homey looking

It looks like they used a lot of large limestone bricks

Nice farming country around Spring City

Spring City really is named after a spring

Driving through the Huntington-Eccles National Scenic Byway . . . wow!

We stopped here on the east side of the canyon to stretch

Elk just hanging around the fields

August 2007 six coal miners were trapped by a cave-in at the Crandall Canyon Mine.  They, along with three rescuers died in the mine
